“Behavior is the mirror in which everyone shows their image.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
You have heard the saying, “image is everything”. Well this past Sunday we had a discussion in Sunday school class with kids ages 12 to 15. The focus was on what image they were portraying at school. Needless to say, the majority were not much concerned about their image and could not look far enough ahead to understand that some of what they do now has ramifications for their future. It was refreshing to listen to some and downright unnerving to hear the perspective of others. I walked away thinking where have we went wrong with some of these kids.
The answer that I have come up with so far, is that the image we portray as adults is just as deplorable and often times worse. And we are the role models?!
Some would argue that image is not everything…and I do not disagree. But that being said it is the only thing that is visible to others for they cannot know what is hidden in our hearts. The thing is we have to work on our heart issues so that we can portray an image that is worthy of youthful spectators.
Look in the mirror. What do you see? Whatever it is, others see it too.
