I was standing in line at work today getting lunch and the guy in front of me turns around and says, ” you have a beautiful smile”. I smile wider and reply, “thank you”, although I am aching to roll my eyes and say something sarcastic instead because I wasn’t really in the mood for small talk with an overly friendly stranger.
When the guy gets to the counter his conversation with the sandwich artist is full of pleasantries. He repeatedly said “thank you” and even said yes “ma’am” a handful of times. So next I thought he must be mentally ill or practicing skills he learned in an anger management seminar.
After he paid for his food he bid the cashier and I farewell by giving us a nod of his head and saying, “enjoy your day”.
It wasn’t until then that I realized I had mistaken kindness for mental illness (gasp)! Seriously?!
My only hope is that if kindness is really a disease it becomes contagious;)
